How Much Does It Cost to Spend a Month in Cancun During Peak Season?

Setting the Stage

This post details my month-long stay in Cancun during peak season (January-February 2024), part of my broader exploration of geographical flexibility and “van-life.” I had previously visited Mexico in 2022 and 2023, using those trips to test the experience before committing to a longer stay.

My motivations for choosing Cancun included enjoying warm weather, spending time outdoors, and resetting daily habits - particularly breaking my reliance on fast food purchases.

Choosing Cancun

Monthly rentals in Mexico proved significantly more affordable than comparable units in Southwest USA metropolitan areas. Given my positive previous experiences in the Quintana Roo region and comfort navigating local logistics, Cancun emerged as the ideal destination for my winter escape.

Preparation and Logistics

I sought specific apartment features:

  • Full unit with kitchen
  • Proximity to main transit
  • Quality WiFi
  • Reliable hot water access

I selected an apartment in the Pok-ta-Pok neighborhood, balancing affordability with convenient beach access and reduced tourist commercialization. Our grand total for 30 nights in a desirable tourist destination during peak season was $1,692.84 including taxes and fees.

Key Insights

Spending flexibility in Cancun varies dramatically based on lifestyle choices. Living more like a local will always be cheaper than living more like a tourist.

Longer stays allow better amortization of fixed transportation costs. We intentionally balanced comfort and access with affordability, choosing our neighborhood’s quieter character over maximum cost reduction.

Reflections

This experience highlights the achievability of extended tropical living through intentional planning. With careful consideration of priorities - whether comfort, experience, or budget - extended stays in tourist destinations remain financially feasible.

We went on to spend subsequent months in Puerto Vallarta where we spent even less.

Note: I used approximately $700 in flight reward points, which underscores the value of credit card optimization in travel financing.
